Freyday Free-for all - Bakersfield Photographer

Another week has flown by for me! I love this time of year in Bakersfield where it feels like spring and all the flowers are starting to blossom on the trees. You'll notice the two posts this week had gorgeous green grass in them and were both here in town! (Spring Bridal and Engagements) It's definately that time of year to take wildflower photos and I've got a ton of them lined up for the next few weeks.

If you live in Bakersfield, make sure to check your newspaper tomorrow for the March issue of Bakersfield Life! I worked very hard on this issue to capture the personalities of 10 amazing business women who help make this city what it is today. Our Cover model is none other than Mary Kay Shell, the 1st female mayor and a pilot back in the day. Here's a sneak peak at the issue:
This was probably one of my favorite assignments and if you've followed this blog the past month, you'll know how much these women have inspired me. I was honored to work on this project and hope you get an opportunity to read it! Feel free to check it out online at

Have a great Freyday, a wonderful weekend and I'll have more to post next week!

Engagements - Bakersfield Photographer

I can't wait for this wedding! I got the chance to brainstorm with Erica on the type of engagement shoot she and AJ wanted, and we ended up using the 'winter-dead' trees and bright green grass to create a contrasting, cool shoot. Throw in some beautiful smiles, pops of color and a yellow chair, and I love how the final look came out. Enjoy!

One of my favorites from the can feel the love :)
Isn't she stunning! Way to rock it, girl!

Fashion/Bridal Shoot - Bakersfield Photographer

I've come to the conclusion that I LOVE styling photo shoots and using my creativity and vision to showcase my view on the world. When Ashley contacted me about doing another photo shoot together, I jumped on the chance to work with local vendors and see what we could come up with. My main concept was color and revolved heavily around the use of the beautiful yellow damask chaise lounge from Little White Dress. Add to it smoking hot dresses and the beautiful colors of nature, and here's what we came up with:

Sylvia working her magic!
Me...testing out my 'concept' ideas :)
Here it is in all it's glory...the spring bridal shoot!

With makup touch ups and a wardrobe change, we did some fashion photos for Ashely's portfolio. Check out these gorgeous dresses!

*Dresses are all BCBG sold at Little White Dress - the coolest store downtown! So, if you're looking for something beyond a wedding gown, go meet Jenny, tell her hello for me and she'll get you ready for your party dress needs!

*Makeup by Sylvia of F.L.Y. Cosmetics

*Hair by Jolie Chaidez

*Modeled by Ashley Thompson of Bakersfield, CA

*Special shoutout to Jenn, the Jay to my Nigel, thanks for all your help!

Freyday Free-for all - Bakersfield Photographer

Happy Freyday everyone! This week, I wanted to share my thoughts on styling your photo shoots. I worked on a promotional shoot for my photography yesterday and spent time thinking of how I wanted my photos to come out prior to setting up the shoot. What colors did I want to use, how did I want the makeup, what type of background would suit my concept.....

If you get creative and plan out the look you want, we can work together to make your ideas come to life. This goes for family portraits, engagement session, even style up your baby! As a professional photographer, I get excited to know that a professional event desinger has been hired to make weddings look what you see in magazines. That doesn't just happen by chance, but by lots of planning and thinking about the details. I've had the opportunity to see My Sorted Affair's designs, and always push for my brides to use a design, to work on a theme, to get will make for better photos, and doesn't always need to cost a fortune!

Look through magazines, look online...bring me clipings of what you'd like your 'look' to be styled around. It can just be the era of clothing you'd like to go for, it can be a neat prop that you found at an antique store, it can be designed around what you like to do, your hobbies....the more creative the better!

And since I mentioned it, here is a quick sneak peak from yesterday's photo shoot here in Bakersfield....I love spring!

Full post of photos coming next week! Thank you's go out to Jenny of Little White Dress, Sylvia Perez of F.L.Y. makeup, Jolie Chaidez for hair, Ashley for modeling, and Jenn S for being the Jay Manuel to my Nigel Barker :)

Dog Photos! Bakersfield Photographer

Puppies! Yes, I am a dog-lover....and as most of you know, my 'baby' is my puppy, Miss Kayla. When my good friends wanted to include their bulldog, Rugsby in their family photo shoot this year I was excited. We had SO much fun using my sqeeky toys to get her attention! Rugsby was a good sport (who doesn't love a dog in a scarf?!) and I love the personality I was able to capture from her :) (the humans did well also..haha!) Plus, all you Fresno fans will enjoy this!Want to include your dog in your family photo? Contact Jessica today to book your date! March & April are filling up fast, especially for the wildflower and almond orchards!
Also, I'd like to take this post to promote my good friends and dog-sitter Marv & Lynn of Fetch Pet Care. If you don't like leaving your pet in a kennel while you're out of town, call them for any pet-sitting needs you have. I completely trust them and feel so comfortable knowing my dog is in the best of hands whenever we have to leave her behind. Tell them I sent you!

Strong Women - Bakersfield Photographer

This week's Freyday post is more of a constant thought I've had in my head for the past few days...

I've had a mixture of events this week that all seem to culminate with "strong women". I'd like to think I'm a part of that category and was raised to be a hard worker who could start and run her own business. I've been blessed the past 7 days with meeting so many inspiring women who left me in awe of what they've accomplished in their lifetime. The majority of these experiences came from my March assignment for
Bakersfield Life (I'll be able to post photos soon...or you can see it on newstands Feb 27th) that I am so proud of. I find it energizing and uplifiting to see what can be accomplished when you put your mind to something and work hard for it.

While looking back at the women I met and photographed this week, my mother sent me a 30 page autobiography of my grandmother that she had been working on while being snowed it. My grandmother, Mrs. Betty Jane, is an incredible woman who served as a Lt. in the Air Force and a trained Flight Nurse. Check out this stunning photo I just received:
And this one, which reminds me why I love being a wedding photographer: Getting to capture weddings, love and memories that your grandkids will look back on is so special for me. I love that my job allows me the opportunity to freeze history just as the photographer did for my grandparents back in 1951.
I hope you all have a sweet Valentine's Day weekend... Jessica

Navarro-Olivo Family - Bakersfield Photographer

Laughter is so contagious...and this family had it going on! We did their first family 'portraits' last weekend and I had SO much fun getting to know them. Our hour included Michael Jackson dance-offs, karate, Shamu, sweet Converse shoes, plenty of corny jokes to last a lifetime and some pretty fun memories. How do you catch a unique rabbit? Thanks Navarro-Olivo family for letting me spend my afternoon with you!!!
This is the reaction I get when I tell a joke...about a unique rabbit. And of course, what photo shoot isn't complete without the wild calling of Shamu the whale?! If you've been to SeaWorld, you know the call sign... Are you ready to book some lifestyle portraits where we have fun, laugh, and capture your family's personality? Then contact Jessica today!
